cheap mens premium sweaters There are believed to be as few as 130 endangered western gray whales left in the waters off of the North Pacific, precariously clinging to survival in their increasingly imperiled habitat as they have for centuries — but for one youngster, it was evidently time to move on.
Last September, biologists studying the endangered species along the western coast of Asia attached a satellite tracking device to a nine-year-old gray whale they named Varvara. Researchers were hoping to gain insight into the troubled whales’ migratory patterns, but what they learned instead has forced them to rethink what the species is capable of. Just months after being tagged, Varvara was discovered wading near the coast of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula — a remarkable detour for a whale not known for traveling long distances over open ocean.
“Its a scientific event – a big one,” says Randall Reeves of the Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel. “Its always been believed that gray whales are coastal migrating mammals.”
From Canada.com:
To get to Mexico, Reeves said, Varvara had to cross the Okhotsk Sea off the Siberian coast, navigate up Russias Kamchatka Peninsula, strike out across the huge and deep Bering Sea far from any coast, and into Alaskan waters. Once there, the whale would have migrated to Baja along the North American shoreline.
“For all scientists interested in animal migration, we are following this pretty closely,” Reeves said.
Gray whales once swam in both the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans. Under intense whaling pressure – whale oil was then what petroleum is to the world today – they had disappeared from the North Atlantic by the early 1700s.
Although Varvara’s epic swim was likely a lonely one, scientists are optimistic that the youngster’s instinct to set out for distant shores demonstrates an adaptability which could be key to the species’ long-term survival, particularly as off-shore drilling platforms in their native romp nudges them towards extinction.
“Its a very dangerous place to be a whale,” says Stephen R. Palumbi of Stanford University. “If a whale population is stuck there, its like being stuck in a very bad inner-city neighborhood.”
Researchers have yet to determine what Varvara’s next move will be, or if a new population of western gray whales could arise along the coast of Mexico, but still one thing’s for certain — her trip was one long swim for a whale, and one giant leap for her kind.cheap mens rugged outwears

Danish Designer Builds a Chair the Way Others Make Brooms AND leaning Dryer Exhaust Ducts

cheap mens long sleeve tees Danish Designer Builds a Chair the Way Others Make Brooms will give you what kind of feeling.I smiled when I saw the tip submission from Christian Andersen, a Danish designer. It reminded me of one of my early posts at TreeHugger, about David Olschewski’s chair made from brooms. It was the first post on the subject of adhocism, which Charles Jencks described as:
By using an available system or dealing with an existing situation in a new way to solve a problem quickly and effectively. It is a method of creation relying particularly on resources which are already at hand.
But Christian’s chair just looks like brooms; in fact it is made from piassava fibers, from a Brazilian palm that is, in fact, used to make brooms. He also appears to have used broom making technology to put the fibers in. So I cannot strictly call it adhocism in the way I have traditionally used it, but it is a sort of adhocism of ideas.
A small lounge chair made of recycled oak and Piassava fibers. The idea was to create a piece of furniture, which included a material that had not yet been used in furniture design. The purpose of this furniture was trying to locate a material that would break with the ordinary consumers habitus, in order to increase consumers perceptions about what materials can be used for furniture today. Contemporary furniture is mostly made of either wood, metal, plastic, leather, fabric – and it has been so for the last 25 years. I wanted to design a chair that contained a new material, which could be added to the already existing collection of materials for furniture; an attempt to broaden the horizon.
The Home section of every newspaper occasionally warns readers to clean out the lint trap on the clothes dryer: resulting in reduced fire hazard and faster clothes drying. My dryer seemed to be taking forever with large loads so I went the next step: disassembling all exhaust vent duct segments and washing them out with a garden hose – one disgusting tube at a time.
I knew the duct work had been there for at least 15 years but was still surprised at the amount of glop that washed out (as pictured) and by one nearly-complete plug of lint I found.
Just above where the flexible steel vent is duct taped (it’s really always been duct, not “duck” tape) to the rigid sheet metal tube above it, condensed lint had narrowed the cross section to perhaps half of what it had been. That’s why the dryer had been so inefficient.
There was another big wet glop in the tube just to the left of the elbow. As exhaust air turned the corner it became more turbulent, creating a deposition zone.
Further on down the tube there was a quarter inch uniform layer of damp lint. It got there because the basement is cool, especially when the HVAC air handler is on in the summer time. Water condensed on the inside, gradually trapping lint in increasing thickness as the years passed.
If you had a dryer in a cool back porch room the same thing would happen over time, even without home air conditioning.
Anyhow, the heavy load of wet towels and blankets that used to take 90 minutes to dry now only needs 25.
I’m probably saving a very large amount of energy and money, from now on in. Especially since our electricity rates just went up 40% due to energy “de-regulation” rules promulgated during the last Clinton term: a law which, thankfully, did the exact opposite as the Republican Congress and the Clinton Administration claimed it would!
Bottom line.
Dryers are very energy intensive appliances. It does little good to have an ultra efficient washing machine if the dryer tubes are plugged. If you live in an apartment and pay your own utilities, the same holds true. Clean out the lint filter and every so often the vent ducts.cheap mens pants

nfl jerseys wholesale We can see the action on the TV,while here we can also see it very close Act Compassionately When You Can.
I have a friend who is plagued by panhandlers when he walks to work. For a while he ignored them, but it was impossible. After wrestling with his anger and guilt – for he did want to do the right thing – he collected change in his pockets, and no matter who asked him, he gave something. Immediately his anger vanished. And then his eyes opened, he saw that these people really are lost and alone, and it is an act of cruelty for him to withhold the meager amount they want.
It feels remarkable when petty anger can be transformed to so noble a feeling as compassion. Yet in this case it happened in a moment, thanks to a simple shift in perception. The true self doesn’t goad us into being good. It takes our existing impulses and views them in a new light. Insight opens the gates of the heart.
Many times a day each of us feels the impulse, however, faint, of saintliness. Walk down a city street for ten minutes and you see all around you reasons to give, to help, to offer charity and compassion, to forgive, and perhaps even to love.
In each situation, the need to cut oneself off is present, because that has been a long habit, but a fresher impulse also arises. The true self is sending these new signals.
Notice and feel them. Dwell on them instead of pushing them down. Avoid your habit of turning away or being too afraid to act. Act when you can. Appreciate your own goodness and congratulate yourself whenever you move closer, if by an inch, to your true self. That’s the program, and it is a simple one.
The credo of the true self is joy with detachment. The joy comes from no longer having to cling to a small, defended territory. The detachment comes from having such wide awareness that everything is at once yours and not yours.mbl jerseys wholesale

soccer club jerseys wholesale It’s all about the effects of climate change in todays news summary. We’re in for tough times, no doubt about it.
5.6 Million Urban Shade Trees Killed in Texas
The effects of the driest year on record for Texas are still being tabulated, with the latest info being this figure above, representing 10% of the state’s urban forests and is in addition to the 500 million trees killed by drought as reported in December. Reuters says it’ll cost the state $560 million to remove the dead trees and lead to a $280 million increase in utility bills due to lost cooling from the shade trees.
Summer Temps Now Indeed More Intense in US
New research in Climatic Change, relayed by Science Daily:
By using results obtained from climate models for 1995-2024; they found that summer temperatures that were extreme during 1950-1979 occur more often in the later time period. This supports the conclusion that extreme summertime temperatures are already occurring more frequently in parts of the lower 48 states. A second statistical analysis showed that this increase also is very unlikely to be due to chance weather variations alone, such as El Ninos or La Ninas. Finally, the team evaluated model results for 2035-2064 (representing the middle of this century) and found that extreme summertime temperatures that were rare during 1950-1979 are projected to occur in most summers throughout the 48-state region in the mid-century period. For the mid-century, summertime mean temperatures that historically occurred only 5 percent of the time are projected to occur at least 70 percent to the time everywhere in the 48 state region.
Is Arctic Melting Starting Two Months Ahead of Schedule
Via ThinkProgress (emphasis is in the original):
This winter was looking more or less like previous years, until about a month ago. A flip in atmospheric patterns that brought very late winter conditions to Europe, also had an effect on the fringes of the ice pack on the Atlantic side of the Arctic. Large swathes of sea water in the Barents and Kara Seas that ought to have been completely frozen over, opened up and total Arctic ice growth came to a practical standstill on various graphs…Novaya Zemlya, the large Russian island that divides the Barents and Kara seas, is completely ice-free. The same almost goes for Svalbard, the archipelago in the top left. I think it’s safe to safe that this is unprecedented ever since satellites started monitoring Arctic sea ice in 1979.
Water Shortages Increase for US Counties by 2050 Due to Climate Change
New research in the Journal of Environmental Science & Technology shows “more than 1 in 3 counties in the United States could have a ‘high’ or ‘extreme’ risk of water shortages due to climate change by the middle of the 21st century…7 in 10 of the more than 3,100 US counties could face ‘some’ risk of shortages of fresh water for drinking, farming, and other uses.”cheap abercrombie bikini

Its inland location doesn’t keep this restaurant from serving a wide variety of fresh oysters. “In the age of FedEx, all oysters in the U.S. can be shipped everywhere overnight,” Murray says. Other pluses: a striking art noveau-style building and a staff that knows its oysters.Murray concedes a bias toward this eatery because it’s owned by the oyster producer where she worked for a year while researching her book. “It’s really a stunning example of a farm-to-table type restaurant,” she says. The oyster selection varies but is chosen by the farmers. She recommends trying an oyster slider a miniature fried oyster on a brioche bun accompanied by the house pilsner.
Brooklyn, N.Y.
You’ll find nearly two dozen oyster varieties on the menu at this new restaurant in the Williamsburg neighborhood. Simply furnished with wooden stools and chairs and a marble bar, it’s a tribute to old-fashioned oyster houses, Murray says. “You could imagine seeing it in New York 100 years ago.” She suggests trying several Empire State oyster varieties for an informal tasting.
Seattle
This small restaurant in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood focuses on Washington state food, including Pacific oysters, which Murray says are melony and sweeter than the more briny Atlantic species. “They almost have a cucumber sense to them, a vegetal flavor.” She suggests trying the local Samish Sweets. “Just really a nice, beautiful oyster.” Seattle
East Matunuck, R.I.
You can’t get any closer to the source than this bare-bones oyster shack that’s adjacent to the owner’s farm, Murray says. “You can sit right next to the water.” Along with the oysters, she suggests trying the Portuguese-style fried squid with cherry pepper and arugula. Marshall, Calif.
Murray suggests coming on a weekday to avoid the crowds at this institution on Tomales Bay, north of San Francisco. And even then, call ahead for reservations. The oysters are sold by the dozen, and you shuck them yourself at picnic tables overlooking the bay. “It’s really casual, but the setting is beautiful,” she says.
Houston
Texas oysters are bigger and meatier than those found on the East Coast, and this River Oaks restaurant, which opened in May, is a great place to sample them, Murray says. The atmosphere is luxurious with plenty of brass and leather. “You’ll want to go in and get a glass of Champagne and watch the shuckers at work.” She also recommends the Oyster Fricassee, made with Louisiana Gulf oysters stewed with leeks, garlic, tarragon, white wine and bchamel and topped with toasted breadcrumbs.Chicago
It may have crab in its name, but oysters get the royal treatment here, too. “It’s a big tiled room that feels like something out of the ’30s or ’40s. The shuckers are raised up and on display,” Murray says. Fifteen to 20 oyster varieties are usually on the menu. New Orleans
The patrons and shuckers are reason alone to visit this Crescent City classic. “If you’re an oyster lover, you have to step in here and belly up to the bar. Every time I’ve sat there, I’ve met someone friendly,” Murray says. Like all fresh oysters, these should be eaten raw with just a squeeze of lemon, she says. “Don’t put any cocktail sauce on because that’s offensive to the farmers. It’s just covering up their hard work.”

This Episcopal church sits atop Nob Hill with sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay. The building itself offers exquisite architecture, stained glass and two labyrinths – one is modeled on a path found at France’s Chartres Cathedral. The doors are a replica of Ghiberti’s famous Gates of Paradise from Florence, Italy. “Everything comes together at this beautiful place,” Lester says. Kahaluu, Oahu
A nine-foot Buddha dominates this Japanese-style temple garden in the shadow of jade-colored mountains. Lester first visited on a second honeymoon with her husband, and they discovered a small meditation area on a hill behind the temple. “The entire site is permeated with a holy feeling,” she says.Mexico
Long before the Spaniards arrived in the New World, this Mayan temple watched over the sparkling turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Come early to avoid the tour-bus crowds and take time to climb the steep steps of the main pyramid. “I sat down and closed my eyes and felt like my soul was soaring on the wind on the Caribbean Sea,” near Qubec City
The crutches and rosaries left at this basilica are signs of answered prayers at a shrine dedicated to the mother of the Virgin Mary. Lester says she visited as an overwhelmed young mother herself, and was immediately comforted. “Stepping inside you really feel a balm of peace coming over you. I felt a sense of a greater power.”Old Ship Church
Hingham, Mass.
For centuries, worshippers have sought comfort at this sanctuary built like a ship’s hull that was once a Puritan meetinghouse and is now a Unitarian-Universalist church. The site has a labyrinth and gravestones dating to the 1600s. Lester says she found peace here when she visited shortly after her husband passed away. “The feeling of something greater than myself was with me.”
Sedona, Ariz.
Pilgrims of all faiths are drawn by the vortexes, spiritual energy that some say emanates from the red rocks surrounding this high-desert town. Lester says people come to pray, meditate and reflect at this chapel, which is at its most beautiful in the golden glow of afternoon light. “To the east you see this incredible towering formation. The energy in that place is just amazing.”Cooper Memorial Chapel
Bella Vista, Ark.
This small non-denominational glass-walled chapel has won architectural honors for its seamless melding of building and nature. Located in a wooded glen, the building’s arches mimic a canopy of trees, Lester says. “It’s a wonderful place to connect to the divine through nature. You just don’t want to leave.” Dominican Republic
Located about two hours from Santa Domingo, this cavernous church, which resembles a Spanish conquistador’s helmet, feels impersonal at first. But Lester says all changes when you climb a ladderlike staircase to view a 16th-century painting of the Virgin Mary. High above the sanctuary, the small platform has a holy energy to it, Lester says. “It’s like a spirit touching your heart.”Shasta City, Calif.
Worshippers ranging from American Indians to members of the Rosicrucian Order revere this mountain, where thousands gathered to pray for world peace in 1987 during what was called the Harmonic Convergence. Like many mountains, Lester says the peak seems to radiate spiritual energy. “It’s almost a swoon. It’s very powerful stuff.”
Elkins Park, Penn.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s only synagogue is not only an architectural marvel, but a spiritual one as well. The hexagonal building’s shape resembles hands folded in prayer, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Made of glass, concrete and steel, the building has been called a modern interpretation of Mount Sinai. “There’s a sense that you’re being embraced by the divine,” Lester says.

It may appeal to the most rabid fans of tearjerk romances like The Notebook, but it’s a hard-to-swallow, maudlin tale. Nearly every move feels calculated to wring tears or dopey grins, beginning with the choice of the starring couple. Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams are blessed with substantial swoon-inducing attributes but seem to be going through the motions. They meet cute, fall fast, wed adorably. Then tragedy strikes.McAdams plays Paige, an artist who clicks quickly with the hunky and sensitive recording studio owner Leo (Tatum). They marry in a hastily arranged service in Chicago’s Art Institute, apparently without official sanction. But that’s how this cute, slightly rebellious couple rolls. They also take dips in icy Lake Michigan in their underwear and eat waffles and chocolate truffles for dinner. In other words, they’re Hollywood-quirky.One night while driving in a snowstorm, they lean over to kiss and are hit by a truck. Paige is thrown through the windshield and Leo sustains minor injuries. When Paige regains consciousness her thick curly hair and unblemished face intact she has no memory of Leo or their life together. Her parents (Sam Neill and Jessica Lange) swoop in to rescue their daughter, though they had been estranged from Paige prior to the accident. They’d never met Leo and are, inexplicably, determined to wrest their twentysomething daughter from his loving clutches. But these are caricatures of controlling, wealthy people and Leo is just the slightest bit boho, which to them translates into threatening.Meanwhile, Paige reverts to an earlier Stepford-like persona. She dons bland preppy outfits instead of her cool vintage clothing and is shocked when she sees a small tattoo on her back. Her amnesia may have erased five years of her life, but it’s hard to buy how she re-invented herself so thoroughly from straitlaced country-club girl to a free-spirited sculptor in the first place.Leo decides he must woo his wife all over again, banking on the hope that she’ll revert to the arty Paige with whom he fell in love. But their romance is slightly more complicated the second time around. An old fiance re-appears and family secrets are spilled. Still, there’s never any doubt whether love will conquer all in this predictable wannabe heart-warmer.Paige and Leo’s tale is based on the true story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter. Married in 1993, they were in a car accident 10 weeks later from which Krickitt awoke with no recollection of Kim. They married again in 1996 and wrote a book about their saga, also entitled The Vow.When it comes to romances in which an accident figures prominently in the plot, 1995′s While You were Sleeping did it better. It featured more likable characters, heartier wit and more romantic chemistry. For all of Leo’s voice-over musing about “moments of impact” that change lives, The Vow makes little cinematic impact and will leave all but the most starry-eyed unmoved.

Those are the oft-spoken words in the far-fetched, well-intentioned adventure tale Journey 2: The Mysterious Island(* * out of four, rated PG, opens Friday nationwide), which features a likable performance from Dwayne Johnson, over-the-top portrayals from such talented actors as Michael Caine and Luis Guzmn, and gimmicky 3-D.The opening voice-over narration, distinctively intoned by Caine, describes the influence of sci-fi pioneer Jules Verne, and the film refers to a remote idyll described in his 1874 novel The Mysterious Island.Ostensibly a sequel to 2008′s Journey to the Center of the Earth, it has a similar amusement-park-ride quality and follows the exploits of Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role). Now 17, Sean is sullenly coping with new stepfather Hank (Johnson) who only recently wed his mom (Kristin Davis). Hank is doing his level best but is failing to connect with the teen. Sean, whose father died, is initially resistant but warms up to Hank when they crack a coded distress signal.Sean deciphers the island coordinates with the help of Hank, a former Navy code-breaker. They fly to the South Pacific in search of Verne’s Mysterious Island and, from there, are perilously ferried by helicopter pilot Gabato (Guzmn) and his daughter, Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens).
They fly into a storm and crash-land on an island that puts Xanadu, Shangri-La and most of Disneyland to shame. It’s a spectacular place with a gold-spewing volcano, tiny elephants and iridescent butterflies the size of eagles.
The island’s lone human inhabitant is Sean’s peripatetic grandfather Alexander (Caine), who sent his grandson the message to draw him there.
Dueling adventurers Hank and Alexander lock horns. The film’s few funny lines are bandied amusingly between Johnson and Caine. Hearing Hank call Alexander “Mary Poppins” and Alexander refer to Hank as “Sasquatch” is more entertaining at least for anyone over 10 than the rather lackluster aerial chases with the cast riding giant furry bees.
The quintet must find a way off the island, which the seemingly all-knowing Hank figures out is sinking fast.
It’s a thoroughly family-friendly film, with a subtle message about the importance of father figures. Don’t expect anything resembling believability, but enjoy the blend of strikingly colorful visuals and banter between odd couple Johnson and Caine, which combine for a mild escapist treat.
